Just then Recal felt a hand grab his ankle. Recal froze in fear for about a brief half-second. He then jumped back and screamed. "Don't do that," Recal demanded.1: Dariose vs Recal II
Dariose got to his feet. "So what are you?" Dariose asked. "Are you some kind of lizard?"

1: Dariose vs Recal IDariose stood in the crowd as Nathan Prewitt and Smokestack introduced themselves as the judges. Prewitt, with all his prejudices intact, was in charge of the human competitors. Smokestack, who seemed to be more tolerant than his companion, was in charge of the rest of the competitors. During the speeches, Dariose thought back to his different encounters since he arrived in Prague. The meeting with Beowulf and Maurice, which included the offer to become a Sweeper (all he has to do is survive the first round).
